Faith, family, and farm life ~ Anonymous.

Either living in the suburbs or the epicenter of a crowded busy city, the need to decorate your home in a comfortable and welcoming environment is a necessity. While there are a lot of comfort elements and decor styles, but nothing screams more comfort and coziness than farmhouse style decor. It is simple but with comfy and relaxed vibes. It is pleasant and inviting. Farmhouse style theme can be defined perfectly as an afternoon gathering with old-time friends cooking and eating together and having the time of their lives.

What constitutes Farmhouse style decor?

Farmhouses paved and made their way to the United States in the early 1700 century. They were original wooden-themed big storage places and not a place to leisurely enjoy the weekend. Time and further modifications have defined farmhouse-style decor as something simple and pleasing.

Coloring your walls

Farmhouse setting constitute simplicity and hence simple colors. There are many options to choose from while going for this kind of decor as follows.

  •  White
  • Light yellow
  • Beige shades
  • Natural Tan and light browns
  • Baby blue and pink

The reason for light colors is that they make the place seem relaxed and grand. Bright colors with light hues have a soothing effect on your health and make you feel calm and collected. These colors also make a small room seem bigger because of the psychological aspects. So, choosing from these colors would be wise and therapeutic as well.

A whirl of innovation with the old timely charm

Although farmhouses were introduced in the 17th century if not early, doesn’t mean you have to go for all vintages. You can add your twist to the setting. Carefully think over your setting and add elements of surprise. You can go for a distressed cupboard or table with brand new simple light-colored sofas. It’s all about finding the right balance between the old and new, it can give you an edge on farmhouse styling.

Make it wire to make it fire

Wired meshes made baskets and containers are a great idea while decorating farm style. These wired baskets can be hanged with a wall to keep your newspapers and letters. These can be used as a small ashtray or keeping snacks on the table. They can also be used as small storage spaces to keep your kitchen utensils, plates, and spoons after washing them for drying. These wired baskets are simple and fancy at the same time and are a great way to add an element of rustic farmhouse-style living.

Add sprinkles of other colors

Using neutral colors can be boring and to spice things up dabs of other active colors would add another dimension of color to your place. Add a rug of multiple colors, add potted plants of greenery and flowers, add decoration pieces of bright colors. This is important so you don’t end up with another grandma’s house (no feelings of grandmas were hurt during this point). Dark shaded colors that work for farmhouse style include green, brown, and earthy purple so to stay in the natural element and add life to your place. A brass or copper chandelier can also work pretty well.

Wooden bars

Large exposed wooden bars on the ceiling, as opposed to the neutral walls, can also remedy the boring element. You can also make use of these beams and hang wired baskets and photo frames. These bars would only add color but also a unique new dimension to the structure. You also add bars of iron exposed or painted black. A bit out there but this idea would work and add a new farmhouse style to your home.

Light up your entrance

The area outside of your home is also important while making a style statement. You can paint and decorate your entrance in all white. Add decoration like wired and handwoven baskets and quotes to rejuvenate the all-white and increase the aesthetic by keeping a plant or two, a handwoven doormat with a cool quote. All of it would perfectly come together for you and you can take it from there onto decorating the inside of your home.

Different wooden elements

Add a variety of wooden elements to not only add shades of different colors but also increase the natural aura. These wooden elements can be any article made of wood, for example, wooden mirror frames, wooden picture frames, wooden lanterns hanging from the wooden beams. Don’t overdo the wood of course. But start with little decoration pieces of wood and stalk up to add more variety and shades. Light grey walls and the wooden floor would be the ultimate combination if you need inspiration for a pairing. Woods like pine and walnut have significantly different shades and can add contrast but staying in a natural classification.

Opened, exposed shelves

Although a farmhouse seems to be a simplistic approach but what can be more simple than an exposed shelve with all the contents placed simply and elegantly. The jars and baskets and the stuff in them would not only add pops of colors of neutral walls but also get a storage place. You can also keep a sliding barn door for your shelves if you are not comfortable with opened shelves. A wooden barn-style door would also increase the farmhouse element and make use of the space very well.

Dining room decoration

Make your dining room snug and comfy just like the rest of the place. Throw in some comfortable pillows with colorful covers to add some pops of pretty colors and comfort. Add some traditional style decoration pieces like lanterns and candle holders to add an old timely elegance. Light them up and create a pleasing and welcoming place to eat your meal happily with your family. Add some greenery on the side or hang pots of plants from the ceiling. Natural greens work everywhere and add refreshing feels to the whole area.

Fireplace decoration

Go for a natural exposed fireplace made of stones or wood. Place a rug with a comfy quilt and pillows. Add a relaxed and soft sofa or chair. Keep a small side table with your favorite books and snacks in the drawer. Decorate the top of the fireplace with wooden and metal frames of pictures. Light up your fireplace in the lousy evening winters. Read a book and snuggle close to your loved ones. Nothing so simple would bring you more joy than this. You can also add some cute wall hanging decorations.

Renew old furniture or distress new

Farmhouse style is all about comfort as we have established by using many synonyms of the word comfort. Furniture that gives relaxed vibes is the heart of farmhouse style. The old-time happy memories make our hearts warm and anything that reminds us of the simpler old times does the same to us. So, paint over your old furniture that you have some emotional connection with, or distress new furniture to replicate the old furniture.

You can distress your furniture by easy everyday use things like sandpaper, sanding sponges, steel wool, and scotch bright pad. The very basic and easy tip is to rub any of these things mentioned on raised surfaces and edges of the furniture. This is the basic 101 of distressing and works every time. Don’t overdo it because then you would have to paint over it again.

For painting old furniture, take your article out of their storage place and dust off the dirt with a piece of cloth. Check for any deep corrosion in metal and termite infestation in wooden furniture and take care of that. Then simply paint it. Use neutral colors as it is the main character of farmhouse styling. Paintbrushes like a roller for large surfaces, angled brushes for tricky angles, and natural bristle brushes for wood items would be appropriate.
