The Simple Steps To Perfect Coastal Decoration. Coastal Design Style Ideas.

I do not think there is one person who does not find a beach house charming. The moment you step it into that casual decorated place with sea’s details and the blue shades, you are under its spell. And then relaxation and happiness come! Now, let me tell you: to set it all up is the easy peasy task! Just follow these simple steps to perfect coastal decoration!

What is coastal decoration style?

To put it simply, coastal is beachy. The point is to summon the breeziness of the seashore and to give you summer all year round in your home! Further, it means to get a sensation you have when you are near to the water. So, it uses natural lighting, gentle hues, and a definite aesthetic.

It is not a new style since it is around since the late 19th century. While you will find nautical elements it, those two are not the same thing. That is, nautical is not a synonym for coastal. Nor are Mediterranean and tropical.

Are there various types of coastal decor?

Yes, there are various types of this style, and I will name you a few.

  • American coastal – the most popular type of this decor. It resembles the beaches of America’s Atlantic coast. And it combines classic and casual forms
  • A tropical island – includes real palms or palm ornaments, and tropical themes like pineapples and flamingoes
  • Mediterranean coastal – follows Greek, Italian, and Spanish coasts with more sunkissed tones and a bit of black iron or metal, and other things made of terracotta

A bonus tip is to consider combining marine themes with a rustic. So, if you fancy country decor, feel free to add some distressed furniture.

Which color palette shall I use for coastal decor?

Before we speak of the palette, let us go over the lighting! Your coastal home requires a sufficient amount of light. It simply cannot be shadowy. Rather, it is like there is no barrier between indoors and outdoors. What you will need are big windows,  glass doors, and skylights if possible.

Now, the palette should make you believe that you are gazing at a genuine beach. You can already imagine which colors are with talking about, right? The sun-bleached white as sand, the blue color of the sea, some of gray, and yellow, orange, and red as a sunset.

All beautiful tones, but how to combinate them? First, put white or beige, or a particularly pale light-blue. That should be your principal coloring! Then add some more of the blue as a secondary one. Warmer tints such as yellow or red come at the end.

Natural, natural & more natural – materials and textures

You obviously need natural textures to mimic the carefree touch of the shore and summer times by the sea. That means you cannot skip wooden furniture! I would recommend going for the lighter palette. But I would encourage you to explore with a bit of distress! Plus, you might want a few items of wicker and rattan furniture. It will help to the casuality.

Distressed White Wood Accent Table

Cotton and linen are the most suitable fabrics for this type of style. But for the rugs, pick the jute and sisal. For curtains, take a sheer one with a sea-connected print. And place some seagrass baskets.

Bring the nature inside your home

Since it is all about the sea, it is no surprise that coastal style calls you to introduce nature to your home. But, of course, it will not be something related to the mountains and woods – it will be a sea again! Now, you can actually bring authentic shells, etc. Ocean artifacts are crucial for this technique, so for sure, you should place some bottle or bowl with collected shells. Or you can buy ornamental made to look like them.

White Coral Table Lamp

Also, consider adding some of the decoration outside too, for example, a lighthouse candle lamp. My suggestion is to go for ocean-blue color! If you are living in an apartment, you can still get the same product. All candle lamps are designed for indoors as well. Yes, I am aware that this is a nautical element, not coastal, but the mixing of these two never hurts!

Or, you could be all stylish and get a lamp that looks more like a sculpture. That’s when you bring your favorite fairy tale to life – Little Mermaid.

Bowl vases are ideal for side tables, bookshelves, or even dressers. On the bookshelf, it can be stand-alone, but on the side of the table, I would recommend filling it with flowers! Aim for the blend of blue and green, so it reminds you of ocean waves!

In addition, it does not have to be all purely decorative, but practical, too. What about cabinets with seahorse knobs?

Involving rope is pretty much dope too! It could be a towel holder, mirror frame and many more!

Yet, what you do not wish is to turn your house into a museum. So, even if you like every sea-inspired piece you see, do not actually buy them all! Instead, take some you prefer and do not overboard.

The curtains or the view?

You do not have to live on the coast to have a coastal decoration in your house. So, some cool curtains could do the trick and make you feel like you are on the one!

Depending on your style and the rest of your furniture and details, you could purchase a full motivated print or with appropriate colors.

But if you do live by the coast, do not hide your view with curtains! There is nothing better than to gaze right to the sea, do you agree?

Utilize marine style for wall decors

When it is all set up, it is time to decor your walls! For the color, I would advise simple white or extra pale blue!

Ornamentation does not have to be strictly sea-related. Should I give some examples?

If you followed the Mediterranean coastal style, you could get a metal star. Even tho it is Western, stars are connected on some way to the coastal too!

The bottom line

Humans are drawn to marine hues, and we connected them with calmness, openness, and deepness. When we are close to the ocean, our brains set free feel-good hormones, such as dopamine. It calms us and even recovers what is broken. So, there is no wonder why coastal style decoration is not losing its popularity! All those positive feelings you could bring to your home!
