What to look for in a vase?

There are many different aspects you need to look for while buying a vase for your home. These are discussed as follows:

Length of your Vase

Size seems to matter in every situation and the same is true here. The size is the length of the vase. Stems are not to be too long when compared to the length of the vase. This would make the flowers fall out. Ideally, the flowers would stay static and in place if the length is twice or one and a half times more in length than that of the vase.

Diameter of the vase opening

And then there is the opening of the vase. Diameter is important to give the flowers ability to stand tall and still. It also should not be too tight, so you have difficulty putting the flowers in it. The diameter should provide enough support to the flowers.

The thickness of the vase

Thickness mainly relates to the type of material used to make the vase. But the different thickness of the same material can also make a difference. The thickness of the vase should be enough to avoid it from breaking. But the thickness should not be too much to make it heavy and immovable. So, these are some of the things that matter.

Color of the vase

The Color of the individual vase is just as important as the flowers you put in it. You can use transparent vases to focus on the colors of flowers. You can also use vases of pretty colors to make an eye-catching combination of different colors with the colors of flowers. The color combination can have therapeutic outcomes… So many combinations that you can play with.

  • Black color is the color of elegance and wonder. It would pop out with the bright flowers like purple and blue.
  • The silver color is modern and is traditional as well. It would go very well with black and red roses. Silver vases with black walls are an ultimate and stylish combination.
  • Navy blue vases are intense. It would go best with white lilies and roses.

These are just some of the combinations to get you started, but in the end, it’s all your preference and color matrix.

Material of the vase

The most important thing to be considered is the material of which the vase is made.

Glass is transparent, pretty but dangerous if broken.

Metal is a strong material and sturdy but corrosive.

Ceramic is strong, durable but heavy.

Silver is lightweight, classic appearance but is expensive.

Number of flowers

The stems and flowers you keep in the vase are important because it is directly related to the appeal. Too many flowers kept would seem like clutter. Too many flowers stuffed into the vase would choke the flowers and they might wilt. Too few flowers would make the vase seem lonely. The general rule that would work is to compare the opening of the vase. The total stem circumference should be comparable but not bigger than the size of the vase opening.

The shape of the vase

Shapes of vases also have a different appeal. There is a whole range of shapes for different kinds of vases. You can choose the one from the list discussed later. There are rectangular, square-shaped, round-shaped, bulb-shaped, and column-shaped.

Column vases

Column vase is perfect to keep long-stemmed flowers like lilies and sunflowers. These vases give an appeal of classic, sleek, and modern. Column vase is shaped like a long tube of uniform length. This vase is the same diameter along its length. A perfect choice for a stylish new trendsetting.

Hourglass-shaped vases

Hourglass vases are very common among the vases. Just like an hourglass body, this vase has all the curves in all the right places. Hourglass vase is usually round-shaped and is expanded at the bottom. It is narrowed down in the middle and then a bit expanded on the top. The vase is supremely amazing for plants that have shorter stems and extensive branches like roses.

Round vases

A round vase is like a round globe with an open top. A fishbowl kind of vase is super charming and works perfectly for a tied-up bunch of short-stemmed flowers. Flowers that are of equal length of the vase look amazing for this vase. Flowers like roses and daisies would look exquisite in a round vase.

Bud vases

These are the small vases for individual stems of flowers or a small bunch of the same kinds of flowers. You can empty your jars of jam and milk and use them as small vases. They are pretty, small, and cute. They are inexpensive and used to keep a single flower or a small cluster of the same flower in a combination.

Rectangular vases

These are narrow in one dimension and expanded in the other and do not have equal division. Rectangular vases showcase each and every flower in a group. You can present each flower in its glory separately among others. This vase gives the most unique, modern, and up-to-date look. They make everything seem from the future wherever they are placed.

Materials of the vases

Following are some of the materials used in the making of vases.

Clay

It’s cheap and easy to mold. Sculptures made of clay are quite traditional and old. They have been around for centuries along with other types. They can help keep the water for flowers cool as they are bad conductors of heat and electricity. They also have small pores to let the stems of flowers breathe. It can help them stay fresh and beautiful for longer.

Porcelain

Porcelain is probably the second thing Americans are obsessed about after Kardashian and Jenner sisters. Porcelain is made of a Ceramic material related to clay that is heated up to extreme temperatures. The temperature reaches up to 1400 °C to impart strength to the material. Classic and strong, Porcelain is a great choice for vases with unique patterns and shapes.

Metal vases

Metals are strong, sturdy, and lightweight. They are used in items of decoration including fountains, frames for pictures, lanterns, and vases. Metal vases include bronze, copper, and stainless steel. They give a smooth and shiny finish with a clear and polished surface. The metal is rather cheap than silver or gold but is durable and gives an expensive vibe. Metal vases are an attraction among Gothic, techno, and hi-tech themes. Nevertheless, metals are prone to corrosion.

Crystal vase

Nothing screams sophistication and allure more than crystals. Crystals are unique and pretty but expensive and high maintenance. You need extra care as to where you put them. You don’t want your crystal vases to be in a vulnerable position of falling and breaking down. They go with a certain setting, which is nothing but high class. Crystal vases have twinkling surfaces with unique patterns that reflect light. When sun rays fall on the crystal, it shines and presents a phenomenal appearance of your vase.

Plastic vases

Plastics are a new material as to when compared with the above and below discussed materials like metal and clay. But they have gained much importance and application to many areas and products. Vases made of plastic are lightweight, low maintenance, and unique. Plastic vases can be transparent and of different colors. Plastic vases can very soon lose their appeal. Plastic vases are definitely not family heirloom material due to their short life span.

Fireclay vases

Another useful material to make vases is fireclay. It is a material resultant when the clay is mixed with glaze after heating them up to the temperature of 1600 or so degrees Celsius. The Fireclay in its final form is strong and resistant. They resemble cast iron which is very durable and strong. Fireclay vases are found in a variety of shapes and patterns.

Wicker and Fiber weaved vases

You can add a unique and new fling into your home decoration by using hand-woven vases. Wicker and fiber-made vases are new and out of the box. They are lightweight, portable, and easy to handle. If you know knitting you can whip a vase yourself or just buy it. If you want to add water to keep the flowers fresh for a long, you cannot directly add water to the fiber vases. You can keep an inner part made of other materials like plastic to add water.

Flowers complete the beauty of vases and I prefer roses to do the job. To know Why I am fanatic for Faux roses and home decoration using them

Wood and bamboo made vases

You can also choose bamboo or wooden vases. They can be recycled, eco-friendly, and lightweight. They are light on the pocket and are pretty to look at. These vases are kept in the patio and outside the sitting area because of their nature element. You can be painted over the wooden vases with pretty colors or enjoy the natural brown color of the wood. Bamboo vases are flexible and unique.

Silver and Gold vases

If you want something way too out of the normal prize range, just go for a silver or gold vase. They are expensive but intricate, modern yet traditional. These vases have been around for so long, owned by Kings and Rulers. Gold and Silver elements of the periodic table are noble and stable. They are none reactive so non-corrosive, strong, and durable. If gold and silver are out of your budget, you can go for gold- and silver-plated vases too. They are cheaper but provide the same attributes to some extent.

Arranging flowers in the vase

How you arrange your flowers in your vase would define the overall appeal. If you are aimlessly stiffing the flowers in, it would just be a big mushy clutter. If you place them in a specific orientation. It would look good even if it is an ordinary vase. To start arranging the flowers first, measure the circumference of the vase and move forward from there. The diameter of the flowers altogether in a bunch should be less than the total opening of the vase. It shouldn’t be too less. Start by putting the flowers around the edges. The flowers are to be kept in a zig-zag fashion. Keep rotating the vase and see how the flowers look. After making the outer circumference fill in the center with flowers in a circular fashion.

Maintenance of the vases

It is necessary to clean your vase. The most simple process is to use a damp cloth soaked in water and soap gel. And rub it gently over the vase to clean off any dirt and stains. You can use stain removers for somewhat permanent stains. For metal, you would need to take care of the corrosion in addition to dirt. Change the water after every three days or so. It would keep the flowers fresh and breezy for longer. Cut the stems too, not to shorten the flowers but to allow the flowers to breathe through fresh-cut stems.
